Question
Gramps,
You answered a question positively regarding if God would think it’s OK to donate blood and organs but, if it were carried a step further, what do you believe God would think about reproduction other than by the natural plan He ordained? In particular artificial insemination where either the egg or the sperm or both are NOT from the biological parents. The data I found from a Christian perspective is that it would be wrong, even, tantamount to adultery if the parents are married and use the ‘parts’ of ‘outsiders’. This may be too controversial and sensitive for you to reply. Thank you.

Answer
Genia,
The Church’s policies on these issues are outlined in The Church Handbook of Instructions, a guide for leadership in counseling with members. The relevant sections are 21.4.3, 21.4.7, 21.4.13, and 21.4.16. Please note that in many of these, the policy does not strictly forbid an action – leaving room for the Spirit to dictate the best course of action.
“Artificial Insemination – The Church strongly discourages artificial insemination using semen from anyone but the husband. However, this is a personal matter that ultimately must be left to the judgment of the husband and wife. Responsibility for the decision rests solely upon them.
Artificial insemination of single sisters is not approved. Single sisters who deliberately refuse to follow the counsel of Church leaders in this matter are subject to Church discipline.”
“In Vitro Fertilization – The Church strongly discourages in vitro fertilization using semen from anyone but the husband or an egg from anyone but the wife. However, this is a personal matter that ultimately must be left to the judgment of the husband and wife. Responsibility for the decision rests solely upon them.”
“Sperm Donation – The Church strongly discourages the donation of sperm.”
“Surrogate Motherhood – The Church strongly discourages surrogate motherhood. “
