Husband’s permission for baptism

Dear Gramps,

I first came across the Book of Mormon 3 months ago and it has completely changed my life. I have a strong testimony and believe the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints to be the one true church. My husband however, is completely opposed to my conversion, to the point that he took off his wedding ring and threw it at me. We are currently living in the same house, as the parents of our children, but most definitely NOT a couple. This works well as long as we don’t discuss the Church. As part of the compromise I will go to Church one Sunday out of every four and the others we do things as a family. Do I still need his permission to be baptised? Thanks.

This truly must be a difficult situation for you. You have read the Book of Mormon, discovered the truths it teaches, and now face your spouses disagreement with your choice.

I am pleased to hear that he is willing to compromise with you in attending Church services. The Lord will bless you according to your faithfulness and according to your individual circumstance.

Unfortunately, a person who seeks baptism in the gospel of Jesus Christ must receive permission from her/his spouse in order to be baptized.

My recommendation would be to continue in patience, continue in mighty prayer, continue in fasting that the Lord will soften your husband’s heart. The Lord is definitely merciful toward his daughters in these circumstances. Be an example of the believers.
