Question
Gramps,
There is a song in our hymnal, “While of These Emblems We Partake,” ( #174) which states in verse three that “[t]he law was broken; Jesus died….” Christ himself told us, in both the New Testament and the Book of Mormon, that he did not come to break the law but to fulfill it. (See Matt 5:7-9; 3 Nephi 12:17-19; 15:5-8) How can these differences be reconciled?

Answer
Concerned,
They are talking about two different Laws. The law that was broken was the one given in the Garden of Eden not to eat the forbidden fruit. That lead to the fall and the need for Jesus to die to complete the atonement.
The Law of Moses (and all the Prophets) was the one that Jesus fulfilled. The prophets and the Law of Moses were designed to point everyone to Christ and His atonement so that they could be redeemed from the fall. Christ completed His work and fulfilled the Law
