Question

Gramps,

What will our resurrected bodies look like? How old will we be? Will we all look the same?

Answer

Dear CC,

When the pre-mortal spirit is born of its Heavenly Parents it is in the form like man. When a mortal body is born of its earthly parents, the previously existing spirit enters the mortal body, giving it independent life. The physical body grows into the general likeness of the spirit. After death and the resurrection, the resurrected body looks like the spirit body. There are no two people who look exactly alike. Also, there must be no two spirits who look exactly alike.

When we die and return to the spirit world, we will recognize the spirits of those people that we knew in mortality who passed away before we did.

If a person dies as a child, that person’s mature spirit will return to the spirit world in the form of an adult because that is the form that it had when it left the spirit world to inhabit the body. When the child is resurrected it will be resurrected as a child in the same that it was laid down, for there is no growth in the grave. However, upon resurrection that body will grow to the mature stature of the adult spirit that inhabits it. I would imagine, therefore, that when an old man dies, he will be resurrected as an old man, but the body will rather quickly rejuvenate itself, growing into the form of a perfect man, in the likeness of the spirit that inhabits it..

Resurrected beings can suffer no more death; they are eternal, they live forever, they are indestructible. We fashion in mortality the kinds of bodies that we will possess for eternity. This mortal period is very short, but it is extremely important. Here many choices are made that will determine our station forever more. Our Heavenly Father loves all his children and desires with a desire so intense that we cannot comprehend it that his children return to live with him in his presence for the rest of eternity. That they may do so, He has established and revealed the way that it can be accomplished. This way is identified as the gospel of Jesus Christ; and there is no other way. As written in 2 Nephi 9:41,

O then, my beloved brethren, come unto the Lord, the Holy One. Remember that his paths are righteous. Behold, the way for man is narrow, but it lieth in a straight course before him, and the keeper of the gate is the Holy One of Israel; and he employeth no servant there; and there is none other way save it be by the gate; for he cannot be deceived, for the Lord God is his name.

Therefore it is of the very utmost importance that during this life we learn to live in strict obedience to all the commandments of our loving Father in Heaven. These are encompassed in the principles, the laws and ordinances that are embodied in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that was restored to the earth in the year 1830 by the prophet Joseph Smith, who was called and prepared by God for that very purpose.
