What is meant by loud laughter and light mindedness? Also what exactly does it mean to hearken unto your husband? Thanks!!! Love your website!!!!

Melisa

Hello,

Let’s look at the definitions of each first.

Lightmindedness if defined as being frivolous, inanely silly, or lacking serious purpose or attitude. In the church we define this a tad further by including the meaning of making a mock of sacred things. Please remember that there is a difference between being light hearted and light minded. Being light hearted implies being free from care, or optimistic.

Loud laughter is usually associated with light mindedness. When the Lord commands us to avoid loud laughter, I don’t believe he is talking about not having a sense of humor. Rather, in that context, it connotes derision of someone or something, in that you are trying to make someone else feel bad about themselves. I believe that if you think close enough about it, you can see where the line is drawn. Attending a comedy club or watching a funny movie wouldn’t necessarily be classified as loud laughter. Think of the attitude of those in the great and spacious building seen in Lehi’s dream. The were pointing, mocking and laughing at those that had partaken of the fruit of the tree. I believe we can safely assume that that would be an example of both light mindedness and loud laughter.

As for hearkening to your husband, I believe that we need to understand that the kingdom of God is one of order. Parents ‘rule’ together in the family unit, in that neither is above the other in matters dealing with the family or in decisions made therein. Neither the husband nor wife should dominate the relationship, but work with God in making a strong and viable union that will last the eternities. However, the husband will be held responsible before God regarding bringing his family intact into the eternities. His is the divine responsibility to lead out in prayer, in worship, in family home evening, thru example, of one that loves the Lord. His wife should not be one iota behind him in these matters, but his is the responsibility to lead out. When he is acting in this manner, it is the family’s duty to support him in his calling. Again, this is not dominiation, but rather having an orderly pattern of accountability.

Hope this answers your questions.
