A woman asked to be removed from the records of the church. She then had a sex change operation and is living as a man, attending church. This person expects to be rebaptised and given the priesthood. I can see rebaptism, maybe, but do you agree with my supposition that the priesthood will be given only to those who are genetically male? (No, I am not making this up.)

Dear kch,
First, it needs to be established that in The Family: A Proclamation to the World, it specifically states that “Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose.” What your friend has done is to make herself at odds with the basic teachings of the Church regarding gender. If your friend’s purpose is to leave the Church as a female and come back as a male, then she is unrepentant about her actions and her willingness to try to fool the Church into something that was not to be in the first place. Baptismal candidates who have undergone a transsexual operation must receive approval from the First Presidency before being baptized. Also, they are not permitted to hold the priesthood nor a temple recommend. She may move to a new area and very well fool everyone and be re-baptized and attain the Priesthood, however, I don’t see how she would be able to escape the final condemnation of a just God for treating her gender and the Priesthood so irresponsibly.
