Question

Gramps,

What is done with the left over sacrament bread and water? As I see it, it is still set apart emblems of the Savior and should be treated as such. I have noticed that some primary children go up after and grab handfuls and eat it.

Michael

Answer

Michael,

Left over sacrament emblems are simply disposed of with reverence. I personally  don’t believe that it would be appropriate for children to just ‘eat it’ afterwards.

While it might seem to be a better use of leftover bread (instead of throwing it away), it would indirectly teach a less than reverent attitude towards the sacrament ordinance. I believe that reverence is an important attribute to teach young children.

If a family was truly hungry, they should speak to the Bishop for assistance instead of raiding leftover sacrament bread.
