I am disabled and live off disabled income and it is very low. I have not been able to pay tithing, but I do give on fast Sunday. I am also in debt for over $2,000 dollars. I always wonder, when I will be able to do so? I do not have a car, and I live with pain constantly. I do without so much already, I am so glad and blessed to be able to go to church on Sunday, the highlight of my life.

You may notice by reading the article that the Book of Mormon is quoted and also D&C a lot more than the bible. This is because these are modern revelation for our day. You are correct that the ways tithing were donated in most of the time of the bible was very different from how tithes are used today. It is important to note however that today's system is just as inspired as the older ways.I just want to ad my testimony that miracles happen when we press forward in faith and put God and his commandments first. Tithing is one of the most powerful ways to call blessings from heaven and YES sometimes blessings are financial especially when that is what is most needed. I do not condemn anybody for not paying tithing nor do I claim that it will solve all problems if it is paid. What I promise is a cherished experience as you connect with the powers of heaven and feel the hands of God working in your life.

Dear sisters,

There is a problem when you let the Old Testament trump the New Testament, which says to give "as you decide in your heart . . . not under compulsion." (see 2 Corinthians 9:7)

There is another problem when you are given misinformation even about the Old Testament commands regarding tithing. Only landowners were commanded to tithe in the Old Testament. (Leviticus 27:30-33) Giving money in place of the plant tithes was discouraged (with a 20% penalty) and no one may pay money instead of the required animal. Tithing was never about money. And non-landowners did not tithe. Not only did the poor not tithe - they were supposed to be able to "eat their fill" from the tithes about every third year. (Deut. 14:28-29, Deut. 26:12)

It is not playing fair to say you have to tithe when all the Biblical statements about tithing have been changed: Who gives, who receives, what tithes are, how many tithes there are, and further that it is OK to ignore the conditions the Bible places on those who receive tithes. The people who teach tithing don't take the actual scriptural commands seriously, and neither should you.

If you are already on church assistance for food, and you still cannot make your bills while getting some government assistance, who can we pay tithing when we are already in the hole to start with. If you were making say 1500 net per month, then lose wages down to 1000, and your monthly bills are more than you take in even after food is taken care of, what is more important, power and water or tithing? The blessing of heaven are great but when you have children keeping the water and lights on to me seems more pressing. As mentioned in the UK, the church refuses to help with bills other than food. I am in that situation and have asked for help and was told that food would be provided for and nothing else, but even though when sitting with the bishop he could see there was a shortfall after the food assistance, he reminded me I was expected to still pay tithing which will put me even further behind and unable to make all my bills.
I am actively seeking another job, a 2nd job, but until I get one, I pay tithing or I pay utilities.
