I do not believe that a blood red moon is fulfillment of the prophecy. This is normal during a lunar eclipse, which has occurred during the beginning of time. I have heard that moon turning to blood could mean war.

One thing I have always wondered about this prophecy is should this prophecy be taken literally or figuratively? Christ often taught in parables, and there are many instances in the scriptures where we are to look deeper into the meaning of what is being said.

I often think of the verses in 1 Cor.15 that talk about the glory of the sun, moon, and stars being likened to the Celestial, Terrestrial, and Telestial glories. Now, think about what the term “Celestial” refers to according to the scriptures. It would be safe to say that this can refer to the kingdom of God. During the great apostasy, Christ’s church was not found on the earth. The kingdom of God had been taken from mankind. Could this be a “darkening of the sun”?

Regarding the Terrestrial, who will inherit this kingdom? Those who have led good lives, did good on this earth, and tried to do what they thought was right. Now consider the current state of society, and many other societies all across the world. Do we see a rise in wickedness? Do we see righteousness becoming a minority? Do we see people using “righteousness” as a cover for evil? Could this be an example of the “moon turning to blood”?

While I am not proclaiming these ideas to be doctrine or even correct interpretations, I am only offering this up as an idea, or possible interpretation. The darkening of the sun could have reference to a great apostasy before the Second Coming (which has already happened) and the moon turning to blood could have reference to the world becoming more and more sinful, having the blood of this sins of this generation upon its garments. We are told to search for light and truth, an ever increasingly difficult thing to do in the latter-days, and to become clean from the blood and sins of this generation.

Those are my thoughts on the subject, and they fall somewhat in line with Pres. Hinckley’s remarks when he said that the prophecy of Joel had already been fulfilled.

I agree with John_Gray. Lunar eclipses have been happening since the creation. The blood moon, howver, is a sign of the times/latter days because to produce a red moon during a lunar eclipse, the earth’s atmosphere must be rather heavily polluted to produce the red effect on the moon. This would not be possible if the earth’s atmosphere was clear and just comprised of air and water vapor, which it once was until modern times This would surely be why it would be given as a latter-day sign.

During the October 2001 General Conference, President Gordon B. Hinckley gave a talk titled, “Living in the Fulness of Times,” in which he said,

“The vision of Joel has been fulfilled wherein he declared:

And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:

And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.

And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.

The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come.”

So it appears the prophecy of the moon was fulfilled by October 2001.
