You have to be certain that the BoM peoples either WERE the Mayans (not likely) or lived near them.
And to use the supposition that the darkness may have been from volcanic activity, neitber was SeaTac only about 85 miles away, significantly "darkened" by the May 1980 St. Helens eruption, simply because it was UPWIND.

I watched a video on YouTube on the eruption of Mount St. Helen May 18, 1980. She exploded at 8:32am. Volcanic ash covered the whole sky turning day into night. Pure blackness. You could not see the sun, there was zero light. In the video the ancient people of the Americas said “there was no light anywhere> The people can even feel the darkness.” They may have felt the ash in the air. I would not be surprised if it was volcanic ash that caused 3 days of darkness. Watch this 5 minute YouTube video of a man recording getting caught in the ash of Mt. St. Helens just minutes after the eruption. Notice the darkness. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njV9ski1gB4

The darkness could also be explained by describing a massive earthquake along the New Madrid fault, which runs right through the heart of what I believe are the Book of Mormon lands near the boundary of the Nephites and the Lamanites. A massive earthquake happened there in the 1800s, and descriptions of that quake sound just like the descriptions in the Book of Mormon. The quake produced intense eruptions of sand and earth into the air. They also produced dark vapor that blocked out the sun, and gasses. Notable is the fact that some gasses can displace the very air that fire needs in order to burn while other gasses can fuel the fire.

The reason scholars hypothesize volcanoes is because it fits their Mesoamerica paradigm.
