I have experienced this same thing. Every time I prayed to soften my husbands heart, it seemed as if all the demons of earth were working on him at the same time. I stopped praying for him, and started praying for myself. I prayed so that I would know what to do and say that would help him. After 2 years, I can happily say that when I pray for my husband now, he seems to be a little sweeter and more sensitive. He is not a member yet, but I have faith in God's timing and I will wait patiently for the time when I can have him by my side. God will not make you choose between your wife and your faith. To anyone out there that is struggling with this, I say turn to God and work on yourself. Also, that kindness and love is followed by kindness and love.
