In reply to <a href="https://askgramps.org/can-physical-intimacy-spirituality-compatible/#comment-33477">Marianne</a>.

Marianne, I do not know how old you are, but you show considerable wisdom. I would like to take your comment one step further. The two great commandments that encompass all the other commandments are to love the Lord, and the other to love our neighbor. When the Savior was asked, "Who is our neighbor?" He responded with the parable of the good Samaritan. If one delves into this further, our closest neighbor is our spouse, followed by our children, relatives, etc. Taking this yet one step further, we are commanded to become one; and as we do so, we become one with the Lord. It fits perfectly.

It is interesting to me that service is actually one of the biggest linking principles between the two, intimacy and spirituality.
For instance, one cannot "fall" out of love. Instead, one chooses to serve less and less, until distant, neglectful and absent (very unromantic!), yet, ironically, service is the substance of romance. It is true that without service in intimacy, notice, one often gets "left behind", or frankly artificial means are used because natural ones are neglected, leaving only one 'sort of' fulfilled (because how can one be fulfilled if one left another hungry?). Service is powerful. That knight in shining armour is attractive because he is thoughtful enough to attend her needs and is present, a location-location-location word. Principles of truth do meet up and are healthily interdependent, unlike selfish codependency. True love is not selfish, but is the product of abounding benevolence one to another, remembrance one of another. Romance is not a mystery, it is a gardener at the work of constancy and attention. Learning to receive the kindness of the gardener is equal service, a great challenge at times. It is easy to neglect ones self if they don't expect that loving service is truly available, because one might feel they are not valued highly. The service of giving assurance that that it is available is a great gift, therefore, can create ever increasing bonds.

At least a part of the answer revolves around what "Love" is. Itself a subject with some inherent contradictions but a good human level working definition of Love is "A state of mind in which the happiness of another is essential to our own." Another fairly easy to understand by us mortals is "Love is a little like strawberry jam, it is hard to spread it around without getting some of it stuck on ourselves." The ability to focus and understand in depth is quite limited while we are mortal.
