What do Mormons believe happens after death in the afterlife?

Mormons believe death is a passing into an afterlife. Mormon obituaries often speak of someone having “passed away” or having “gone home to Heavenly Father.” Mormons believe that after death a person will return to God but they can only remain in God’s presence in the afterlife if they have been good people.
