I agree that the date of Christ's birth probably doesn't matter very much – but Latter-day Saints do believe that for some reason the Lord did reveal the day in modern revelation to Joseph Smith. On that topic, Elder James E. Talmage wrote the following:

“We believe April 6th to be the birthday of Jesus Christ as indicated in a revelation of the present dispensation... in which that day is made without qualification the completion of the one thousand eight hundred and thirtieth year since the coming of the Lord in the flesh. This acceptance is admittedly based on faith in modern revelation, and in no wise is set forth as the result of chronological research or analysis. We believe that Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem of Judea, April 6, B.C. 1.”

~ Jesus the Christ, Chapter 8 (Last paragraph)

I have often thought it interesting that while we celebrate these days, they don't seem to have the same gravity as in other churches. Or is it just me?

Jesus was definitely NOT born on April 6, 1 BC, or the wise men's visit to Herod and Herod's slaughter of the innocents took place before Christ's birth, as Herod died in the spring of 4 BC. The fact remains that we don't know the exact day or year (Jeffrey Chadwick has some interesting things to say in his book, The Stone Manger, and also in an article on "Dating the Birth of Christ" in BYU Studies. But it really doesn't matter when He was born. What matters is that He was born.
