When I was in the Italy Milan Mission in the mid-70's, there was a copy of the book (it had a green cover) that circulated under the Pet Name of "The Answer Book". It was not on the list of approved reading material. I have no idea where it came from originally, but the way things went were like this: If you were lucky enough to possess it (I received it from my first companion by mail before he left Italy), you kept it until you went home and then you bequeathed it to one of your favorite companions who were still in-country for a while. The other tradition was that each "owner" got to write his name inside the (front in my case) cover before handing it down to the next recipient. I can't really remember, but I think we also got to leave a one-line comment or something like that. I never, EVER thought I would get a chance to tell anyone besides my family about "The Answer Book"! I love it and it has answered many of my questions, AND ended many a late-night-argument between companionships in Northern Italy. God Bless Bruce R. McConkie! Tony

Bruce R. McConkie is a stirring apostle of God. I love him and his incredible ability to let the Gospel flow from his lips like a rushing river.
Your facts are a bit in error.

Mormon Doctrine was published under David O. McKay's Presidency... and without knowledge of, or sanction by, the Church. Pres. McKay tasked Marion G. Romney to review the book and report back. He did so, and reported 1,164 error in it, and it was his recommendation that the book never be published, as it was so flawed as to be unsalvageable. McConkie was brought before the entire body of general authorities, and harshly censured. He agreed to remove it, but some time later David O. McKay passed away, and McConkie's father in law became the prophet... and suddenly the book was in print again. :)
