There seems to be quite a bit of evidence in the Doctrine and Covenants that the Civil War came to the United States because they killed the prophets and rejected the saints and the restored gospel when it was sent to them. As a result, divine favor and protection was withheld from our country, and the Adversary had full reign for a time until the country was humbled. As a side note, in doing family history work, it was curious to note that far more county courthouses were burned to the ground in the state of Missouri during the Civil War than in any other state. As a result, the people who lived in that state who persecuted and drove the saints from their homes are having to wait a long, long time for their temple work to be done. The records that are normally available in county courthouses for family history work are simply not available.
