The most poignant treatise that I have seen on heaven and hell is a short one from Goethe's Faustus. This has been in my mind and heart for 50+ years. I don't remember the exact comment made by Faust to Mephestapholes but the answer was, paraphrased, 'After having lived with God living anywhere else is hell.'

Protestants believe the spirit goes to Heaven or Hell.

Catholics believe the spirit goes to paradise or purgatory.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Of Latter Day Saints believes That spirits of those who have accepted our Lord Jesus Christ go to Paradise, and that the spirits of those that do not accept him go to spirit prison.

This is only a temporary holding place because our Lord taught the physical resurrection and showed the physical resurrection first to Mary Magdalene, then to Mary mother of James, to Salome the mother of James and John, to Joanna and Susanna, and many others. He met with Simon Peter and later the same day to Cleopas and another on the road to Emmaus. Better expressed here: https://www.lds.org/ensign/1987/05/life-after-life?lang=eng by Russell M Nelson

It is odd to hear people insisting that the one who confounded the Sadducees belief that there was no physical resurrection did not preach the physical resurrection himself.

Where does it say you can progress for eternity in the middle celestial kingdom? Also, is plural marriage involved in all of that?

Speaking for myself alone, anything less than the top two levels of the celestial kingdom would be hell to me. Because it is only in those two levels that your able to progress and bear posterity. Anything below that will leave you single, having lost your spouse and posterity to someone worthy of them and living out eternity as a single. I would be racked with guilt for having given up what i really wanted for what i thought i wanted in the moment. Having given up the real prize for a mess of pottage I would consider myself in hell no matter what glory it would be.
