In reply to <a href="https://askgramps.org/does-satan-cause-depression/#comment-34427">Robert</a>.

As someone who suffers from anxiety and depression I can promise you that mental illness are not caused by a lack of faith. I did everything I could, but my depression hit when I was at my spiritual highest. Heavenly Father allows us to go through trials to make us stronger. My depression is a struggle everyday. That being said, I know that it isn't my fault. You can't wish away mental illnesses anymore than you can wish away a broken leg. Prayers and blessings are incredibly helpful, yes, and miracles DO happen in our day and age, but most of the time, Heavenly Father allows us to go through our trials. Keeping the commandments helps me to keep things in perspective, but Heavenly Father isn't going to take away my depression just because I want him to. As hard as it is to deal with every day, my illness has made my testimony stronger. I know that Heavenly Father trusts me enough to deal with this. I know that it is making me better. Because of my illness, I make sure that no one has to go through it alone. It makes me humble and compassionate and more dependent on Christ than I thought it was possible to be. It is making me become more like Him. It is a trial, just like any other trial we deal with on earth and it is there for my benefit. To say that mental illness is the fault of the sick is not only ignorant, but against gospel doctrine. As Gramps references, Prophets and Apostles have assured us that mental illnesses are not caused by a lack of faith. They are caused by the weakness that we face as mortals.
If you suffer from depression, or any mental illness, remember that it is when we are at our lowest points (both spiritually and otherwise) that we need our Heavenly Father's help most. He loves you more than anyone else ever could. Have faith in Him and in His Son and, while He may not take away your problems, He will help you to endure them with courage.
P.S. I find the article 'It isn't a Sin to be Weak' in April 2015's Ensign to be of especially great help to me, and that whole magazine is chock full of great articles.
Thank you Gramps for this article!!!

Actually, Mark 5 highlights a textbook example of what we currently call Borderline Personality Disorder, increasingly regarded as the most severe and complex mental illness on record. The Savior instantly and fully cured the man by casting out a legion of unclean spirits. The Savior and his apostles were casting out unclean spirits nearly everywhere they went, both in the new Testament and the Book of Mormon. Unclean spirits possessing the bodies of people were everywhere then and still are now. We are taught repeatedly in the temple Endowment how possession is in fact very real, a threat made by satan that he has clearly delivered on. We learn in the temple how to deal with it. Today, we call these possessive unclean spirits "mental illnesses" and simply throw drugs at them because the apostate and increasingly secular world has lost all understanding of the original problem. The cure requires acting in the name of Jesus Christ, proper priesthood authority, adequate faith, and as the Book of Mormon states, requires the officiator to be in a sin-free state to do that kind of work.
