When an elder is re-baptized after being excommunicated once for adultery, his record is "clean" and it is remembered no more with the Lord (if sincere repentance and forsakes the sin) and church records. But what happens when the same sin is repeated several times over a span of 30+ years, as a single person, and it is either not reported to the bishop, or it is minimized as fooling around a couple of times. Should a new wife tell their bishop? He will not. He also has a past of embezzling from several jobs during that time, and again, minimized as problems with money due to gambling problems. I married my husband 5 yrs ago and he finally made major changes and got his recommend back after 40 years, BUT was never fully honest with his bishops as he moved around from state to state. Now we are having problems that in part deal with some of these issues, (not adultery) and I feel like I can't even talk to the bishop, since he isn't aware of his history, and it makes me feel like I would be tattling on him and trying to embarrass him, which I am not.
The ongoing problems has created a lot of anger on my part, and I am almost ready to divorce over them. We even went to church counseling for a while, but again, I felt I couldn't discuss things that might be past on to the bishop. Do I just move on, (divorce) and say "this is all between him and the Lord" and leave it at that?
