Loved this. It reminded me of my church history trip a year or two ago (1976). The day before we visited the Sacred Grove, there had been a big thunder storm that had caused some serious damage to the grove. Lightening had felled what they called the "patriarch tree," the oldest tree in the grove. The senior missionary couple that greeted us in the farmhouse gave us the story of the grove, then led us in prayer. He was in tears by the end of the prayer and explained that the day before, a group had come during the storm, but wanted to visit the grove anyway. He said he had prayed for the protection of that group of tourists, but felt he had been remiss in his duty as he had neglected to pray for the protection of the grove. Although that day was sunny and bright, with the sunlight filtering through the trees, the sacred quiet of the grove was a bit marred by he sound of buzz saws cutting up the huge tree and other felled branches.
