Probably the best overall answer is that the Church meetinghouse or Stake center has to fit in with its surroundings. A building designed "on the cheap" is not likely to win approval with the local city or county building department. It may, of such necessity, have certain architectural features that the Church would otherwise dispense with. In many more "humble" areas, the locals are happy with a brand new building, even a "bare bones" model, and would consider a more fancily constructed church facility as ostentatious and inappropriate. It should be kept in mind that even in more "humble" areas (including Humble, TX, birthplace of Howard Hughes, I guess), an LDS meetinghouse is typically built and MAINTAINED as well any any similar denomination puts up, if not slightly better. Wherever it builds, the Church is usually bringing the neighborhood up, not pulling it down. Finally, although the turnover of LDS buildings is much less than almost any other religious organization, it does happen, and Property Reserve, Inc, is going to do whatever it can to keep the value of Church-owned properties as high as possible.

I have seen some interesting LDS Chapels. I once walked by what I thought was a Catholic Church and then I read "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints All Visitors Welcome." I notice there was a steeple but no cross.

I have been in several states and many wards. I have experienced twice through my life a Ward showing favoritism to the ward members that have been there for years. Have nice homes. Have money. Dress in Italian suits and ties and their wives wearing expensive dresses. They are the ones who are In the bishopric and their wives have the higher callings in the Relief Society and young women's young men.
Us poor members were put in the nursery and were called to teach the Sunbeams to, CTR. They didn't keeps us women in thev"loop" so we missed the Relief Society once a month and they would change our Ward Temple night without telling us.. I almost gave up my membership because of the people running that Ward. When I left that state I was so happy. Now I'm in a Ward that really cared about its members and new members and November's. My prayers were answered when I pulled into the parking lot.. I felt at Peace.

I really like how Gramps answers are out-of-the-box and I am enlightened. I know from two family members leaving the Church (the gospel) is in part due to their lack of understanding that there are an unknown (or undiscovered) facts that make things appear different than they really are. I think Gramps' answers really reveal what is not obvious to many of us.
