Joseph Smith did not handle polygamy well in my opinion. If you actually research the number of wives, their ages, the fact that he married a mother and daughter. And that he married other men's wives, while they were still married to the other man, it has to make you wonder. I accept it as a significant blunder of Joseph Smith. I stick to the message of Jesus Christ. I put my faith in Jesus Christ, not Joseph Smith. That is how I deal with it.
I don't believe advising someone to ignore it is a good answer. A lot of members do not know the whole truth on this matter and they should in my opinion. You faith and testimony should be in Jesus Christ. So the fact that Joseph Smith handled polygamy poorly should have no impact on your faith.
And I do not believe for one minute that God told Joseph Smith to marry another man's wife.

Polygamy is a great deal for the man, he has a harem of women, and if one is being a bit difficult or isnt in the mood for sex as is normal, the man can leave her stewing and hop over to a wife that may be in the mood or in a good humour at the moment. The woman is left high and dry until she is in a good mood or compliant. I struggle to think of being a wiling participant in such a misogynistic practice in the eternities, as a token of how important plural wives were, Brigham Young once said he could not remember the names with faces of all of his wives.

Also realize this. The Gospel allows marriages for time, and for eternity. A woman can be married to one man for eternity and another one for time. This obviously is true when her husband for eternity has died. But it can also be true while they are both alive. The women Joseph married that were already married to others were marriages for eternity. He was not in a position to take care of them economically in this world, so it was necessary they be married to others for time.

In Joseph's particular case, the prime reason wasn't to raise up a people, it was to oversee the "restoration of ALL things". Others participated because the Lord needed to raise up a large generation of church members----missionaries-----very quickly. Joseph Smith said that every prior dispensation has had plenty of time to do the work assigned to them, except this last one, the Dispensation of the Fullness of Times. There is a great spirit of anxiety in missionary and temple work throughout the church now, of "hastening the work" before the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. The time is so very short.

I have to say, Gramps, I'm impressed by the foundation of the family paragraph. That was very interesting to me... and a slightly different take on something I think I already knew but hadn't ever formed into a complete thought.

Joseph was called to preside over the "restoration of ALL things". Including plural marriage as practiced by Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. This all had to be done before the second coming of Christ. How could it be restored if he refused to participate?
