Joseph Fielding Smith stated that the 2 Cumorah theory was false. One man, a member of the RLDS church started the two hill concept. The church as a whole believed the hill Cumorah was the only one….for the first 100 years!!! Read the book of mormon….is Guatemala or Mexico the “promised land” ..the land that fought with England? It’s imperative that we know the Book of Mormon foretells of what will happen in the last days…..in the promised land…that would be….the United States.

You state that there are two Cumorahs as though it is a settled matter of fact. It isn’t. Many LDS scholars disagree with both the two Cumorah theory and the Mesoamerica theory. The theories you describe and draw from are, in my opinion, a distraction from the truth. It is very troubling to me to see them presenting on this site as though they are settled fact.

I believe that there is just 1 Hill Cumorah, and that initial beliefs about where the Book of Mormon events occurred are off.

As a matter of fact, We don’t know still the real meaning of the word “Cumorah” and we may speculate Moroni give the hill that name either by divine commandment, because it reminded him some characteristic of the old hill Cumorah or just to give a the place an special meaning. So, who really knows?

There is a book called “The Book of Mormon In America’s Heartland”, by Rod L. Meldrum, that seems to give overwhelming evidence that ALL of the Book of Mormon events actually occurred within the North American heartland. One of the numerous pieces of evidence offered is the fact that the only place in the Americas where DNA from peoples of the Holy Land is found is in the native American tribes in and around the Great Lakes region. Look up Haplogroup X in Wikipedia for more information. I used to be a big believer in the central American setting for the Book of Mormon. I lived in Panama for 3 years, and visited Yucatan a couple of times. But after reading Rod Meldrum’s book mentioned above, I’m pretty much convinced it all happened just within the borders of the United States.

According to Wikipedia source: Smith’s mother, Lucy Mack Smith, recalls her young son Joseph referring to the place where the Book of Mormon plates were deposited as “the hill of Cumorah”: Lucy Mack Smith, History of Joseph Smith by His Mother Lucy Mack Smith, p. 100. Book of Mormon witness David Whitmer referred to the hill by name in an account of an incident in which he, Smith, and Oliver Cowdery were riding in a wagon to the Whitmer home inFayette, New York. According to Whitmer, an aged and heavy set man walked alongside the wagon. The man had a knapsack strapped over his back with something square in it. When David invited the man to ride he replied: “I am going across to the hill Cumorah.” Smith reportedly later told Whitmer that they had seen one of the Nephite prophets: Lyndon W. Cook ed. (1991).David Whitmer Interviews (Grandin Book) pp. 19, 27.

Most LDS scholars and archaeologists agree with your response. There are several books that talk about there being two Cumorahs.

In reply to Willie. Willie, As you might have noticed in my response to the question, I did say I don't know how the name Cumorah came to be in New York. I could only speculate. Therefore I have no references that Moroni actually called the hill in New York Cumorah.
