That is very good advice to pray before you read the Book of Mormon or before
you read any scriptures.

These are some of the methods I have used.

Read it straight through. Set yourself so many chapters a day to read.
I call this the plow-through method. Some days you might find it harder
to concentrate. Sometimes I will read scriptures aloud to myself.
At times different verses will stand out to you and have more meaning...
you need to underline those verses. Sometimes I have typed the verse out and
placed it where I could see it often so I could think about it.

Study it by topic. Do a search on the LDS.org site or use the back of the scriptures
and look up topics in the index. This can be very helpful.

I read once where President Hickley studied the life of Christ by reading the
four gospels in the New Testatment (Matthew, Mark, Luke & John) and then he read
the 3rd book of Nephi in the Book of Mormon. I did this and felt an extra closeness to the Saviour.

I haven't studies this way yet, but I want to. Read the Book of Mormon and underline
it using color codes.

Red: All references to the Savior in any form.
Yellow: Doctrine - any doctrine that impresses you -- write in margins your individual impressions.
Blue: Anything that the Savior said.
Green: Qualities for a Christ like life -- His qualities.

I read this quote that made an impression on me.
"If I want to talk to God, I pray. If I want Him to talk to me, I read the scriptures."

Good luck in your studying. You will be blessed.
