Honestly, you need to do whatever you need to to protect yourself and your kids (if there are any) and get ready. For all you know, your husband may not be around and it will be up to you to deal with various circumstances that may come up (hope not but it is possible). I would also point out that it's better to be safe than sorry and you'll apologize later if it was all for naught (which I doubt will be the case). Good luck!

I heard that when Brigham Young first announced we should have a reserve of resources it was to be a seven year supply and then that became against the law so they changed it to one year. There was a time when it was said in conference that there will come a time when we will stop announcing to have a year supply from the pulpit and it will be up to the faith of the saints to prepare without being told. Also I heard that was because in some places in the U.S. It has become illegal to keep a year supply of food so they weren't able to make a general announcement about it for legal reasons. I also believe the Lord wants people to prepare out of faith and obedience not out of fear. I would pray that the lord will soften your husbands heart and just keep reading to him about the things you know and are inspired to read!

The Church has no way of knowing our future circumstances. What is given is a fantastic guideline but does not guarantee peace. We should be prayerful, using scrutiny with what we have, and not assuming the baseline is the end-all.

I can add my testimony to this. I was 24 and single and wanted to be prepared. Yet people my age weren't preparing at all. Even scoffing those who would mention food storage and preparedness during talks. Well I made a commitment to just do my best. Shortly thereafter unexpected extra money came into my life and I knew the lord wanted me to use it for food storage and preparedness. I did so. The important question is...do I feel content with what I have gotten so far? Or is that the spirit working in you because maybe your preparations aren't done yet. I say add more to it. You never know what may end up happening or who else you may need to help take care of should an emergency arise.

About 2.5 years ago, I had a nervous breakdown and couldn't work at the job I was doing (home care provider for a moderately-severely disabled 25 year old); before this, I had managed to save up 3 mos worth of food storage and about 1-2 mos worth of money for bills like rent, phone, electricity. I had to live on my food storage off and on for the time my charge went into the psych hospitals because I wasn't able to draw a wage while my charge was hospitalized. I wasn't working. The 5th month of the 6th year I was employed, my charge spent more time in the hospital than out, I couldn't find other work, my charge lived in my home and I was their sole care giver. I lived on my food storage and cash reserves until they were moved and their care taken over by an agency dealing with their mental/developmental issues. My point of sharing is that, during this emergency time, initially, my food storage and cash saved me and assisted me. My situation is different now that I am 100% disabled and receiving assistance, but at the time, I didn't qualify because I earned too much and no assistance was to be had for a good year or so after. It's imperative we heed the counsel and store what we can for when we can't.
