Let’s start from the male side of this: working with boys younger than 14 means you will have an impact on their preparation for receiving the Aaronic Priesthood if they’re younger than 12 or for becoming a Teacher if they’re 12-13. You’re also helping them prepare to serve a mission. Helping others isn’t just something we should do as men, it’s a priesthood duty.

Female: you would be helping the female children prepare for relief society when they are 18. Values and principles of the gospel will help them become the women they know God knows they can become.
Do you really want to turn down such an opportunity, such a blessing?

In our Ward we have several grandparents that are teaching primary and in the nursery… The kids love it and learn so much… And the 90 year old grandpa in the nursery is their favorite.

My parents taught me to never turn down a calling or ask to be released from one. I think it was their generation. Dad was a convert and his sister was the same way in her Church well into her 80s.

I turned down a calling because I was moving to another state the following week.
