My mother was White. My father from South America is White, Asian, Native American, Hispanic/Latino and Black (the equivalent of a great great grandparent). I never knew my father. I was raised by my mother who was of Scandinavian descent, light brown hair, blue eyes as many of my relatives on her side. I don't know the relatives on my father's side. Most of us on my mother's side are college graduates. My father has a Ph D in chemical engineering and I understand many of his relatives are college graduates. I am a college graduate as well. I grew up speaking English and living in the White culture although I've never been accepted as a White person. Like a lot of men I knew at BYU you'd reject me on the basis of my skin color, even though I am a college graduate and my parents and most of my relatives are also college graduates. You would reject me on my skin color rather than culture.

I was raised in White Culture. I have recently had my DNA tested and I have all three major races in my DNA (The revelation President Kimball received in 1978 affected me more than I realized). I have dark coarse wiry hair, hazel eyes, high cheekbones and brown skin. There were men at BYU who told me they wouldn't date me because I was not White, even though I'm 2/3 Caucasian and have been in a totally White American--European like culture. I've never been really accepted as a White person. I am White on my mother's side and my father had a fair amount of White in his line. He left so the only relatives I knew were White--light colored hair and skin and I am the odd one.

I don't think "prejudice" is much a consideration for that council, and I certainly don't think it's "outdated". The fact is, although it can be overcome like so many other obstacles, ethnicity and familial history are in fact possible agitators in a relationship as close, constant, and permanent as marriage. Race today has been divided rather bitterly, and the non-judgmental, matter-of-fact is that an otherwise good, faithful person of African or Hispanic descent would very, very likely have ideas, concepts, expectations, or goals that may be troublesome to me, and are things you would be far less likely to find in someone with a more common ethnical upbringing and focus. This isn't due to prejudice on my part, it's because race-again, especially today-is highly charged. Racism isn't some modern evil that characterized Americans until recently, discernment between people of different races is a deeply inborn mortal factor that has guided human actions in all nations through all of human history, and for all its evil, has also been used in preservation of families and communities. To say that it's magically not a factor anymore and that we're somehow more "free" to marry "whoever we want" today than we were decades ago is naïve at best.

If I married a person of African descent, there's a higher-than-average chance compared with a western European that they will be concerned with perceived racial issues today, issues that are misconstrued, misrepresented, and abused as fuel for political gain-almost entirely for politics based on principles I know to be in conflict with the Gospel. If I were to marry a woman of Hispanic descent, there's a higher-than-average chance compared with a western European that she will sympathize with the individual plights of unskilled people from Mexico who can not communicate with us, without considering the larger-picture economic and social problems this generates.

I can tell you from personal experience that similar socio-economic upbringing is a worthy consideration. I grew up in an upper-middle class white collar family with few children for an LDS family. My wife was born to a truck driver in Idaho and had six siblings. Our expectations of each other contrast pretty sharply with our actual personal interests and practical skill sets. We still love each other, but this is a predictable and avoidable issue when looking at prospective dating partners.

The counsel given by President Kimball is not dated, it still applies. it is difficult to marry outside ones own culture, nationality, economic background , etc. Interracial marriage is no different. Can it be done? Certainly! Should it be done? That's something both parties need to seriously consider, given the background and cultural differences between races.

"Marry for Love" in American society often means marry for lust. It takes time for attraction to mature into love. The idea that you get married and then live happily ever after has caused more divorce than can be easily imagined. Marriage is a tough job. It is a job with a high paycheck but it is indeed a tough job. The idea of taking the time to get to know each others plans and ambitions is good. The idea of making plans together before actually starting those plans is great. Deciding how to manage the family finances ahead of time makes children an even greater reward. Learning to conform to each others needs ahead of time (such as, discipline for the kids) and consulting over what "our" position is going to be instead of waiting (and arguing) over how do we handle this is an ongoing masters degree in what makes marriage work.

I am quite firmly of the opinion that you should marry a human. Deity asks us to call him Father. I put the term "Heavenly" in front of that so that I call him Heavenly Father. If we can have children with each other than we are his children, and members of the same race.
