The Lord wants us to use and develop our agency. Not to merely blindly ask for things that we desire. We are instructed to think, study it out, and develop plans. We are to seek after knowledge. We are to seek after any thing virtuous, lovely, or of good report. He gave us agency to use, to grow and learn, to learn to choose the right.

Christ did not start at the point of where he would have been able to accept the bitter cup.

The process of learning to love and desire good for others is a major step. Don't think he would feel as if his will was being set aside because we have learned to love, and serve, and pray for others (his children). Indeed he is likely to be thrilled when we pray in behalf of others. Within itself prayer is a feedback mechanism to help us better understand His will. Understanding is a precursor to doing which is almost infinitely stronger.
