Faith: Wow. Really good point. I honestly can't tell you why I automatically assumed Panicked is a "he." Perhaps it's because, and I'm being dead serious here, that the sisters in the church seem to be (to me anyway) more spiritually grounded and have less problems with faith and testimony than do the brethren. In any event, I agree that I should not have assumed that Panicked is a "he."

This is well written. I love how you mentioned the recognition of a Spiritual outpouring often being in hindsight. It really is hard to recognise such in real time and I can testify to that on my mission also. I think sometimes we forget, much like in JSH 1:20, the Adversary will strive that much harder to bring down the true followers of God. If one is close to serving a F/T mission, it is not surprising that there would be that much more resistance, in order to prevent them from serving. Hold onto the experiences that you have already had, they will be your iron rod for a time whilst you are feeling low. All the best, Panicked. Take the leap of faith and I promise that you won't regret it :)

I loved that answer but would like to add a little bit if that's alright. I think I would encourage this young missionary to do one additional thing - to lean on the testimony of others as he continues to strengthen his own. We spend fully 1/4 of our time each month in our sacrament meetings bearing testimony to one another. The general handbook of instructions tells us that we should “bear heartfelt testimonies and to relate faith-promoting experiences.” Why do we do this? So that we can be strengthened by the testimony of others. So lets have him lean on your testimony, or on mine. Or he can lean on the testimonies of his favorite brethren. Or he can lean on the testimonies of close friends and leaders in his ward and stake. Or how about this one - one of my favorites - he can study the lives of the Three and Eight Witnesses of the Book of Mormon. There are some testimonies that can really be relied upon - even though five of the eleven left the church!! (two came back). So I think we should all pray for Panicked. He's going to do fine. :)
