"I think that it’s symptomatic of the tendency toward putting blind faith in the science of today", but it is ok to believe blindly in vague prohibitions? This made me laugh so hard! I don't care if Einstein or The Prophet tells me to do or not to do something, they're both humans, they can both be wrong. In the end, the choice is up to the consumer and it is not anybody else's bussiness (well, maybe their leaders). If our leaders have not clearly stated about this issue, there must be a reason. They're like super specific with other issues, then why not this? They may be just as confused as us. I'm just saying.

Let people drink harmless stuff, be honest and share doggos pics♥

Hi!
So, if it refers to "Hot" drinks, then, hot chocolate and soup could be understood as being bad for you also!?
Sometimes, politics may play a role on those classifications! Back there in Brazil on the 70's, a form of tea largely used by the population in the south of Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina (The "Mate" or "Chimarron") was forbidden by the Council of the twelve apostles (I've seen the letter) but was overruled by the area presidency because it was causing great difficulties for the local leadership of the church to enforce that order. The "mate" is very addictive and caused intense headaches upon stopping its consume!
We tried to enforce the word of wisdom in Brazil but it kept being used freely in Uruguay and Argentina. Then, the order came from the area presidency to stop including the mate or Chimarron in the word of wisdom!

I served a mission in Brasil and the doctrine taught there is "chá preto" or "black tea" all others are acceptable. This is what we taught specifically from the word of wisdom pamphlets that specifically say only black tea.

I understand that Black, White, and Green Tea all come from the same plant. The Church however, has not officially clarified the issue of Green Tea usage. So, in a sense, we are in a situation similar to the coffee vs caffein issue was before the Church clarified it.

The lord was specific about alcohol and tobacco, why not tea and coffee? The word of wisdom is a very confusing read. And the four things that really stand out are - don't drink alcohol, don't use tobacco, eat meat very sparingly don't use hot drinks (whatever that may means). LDS have a meat centered diet and that seems to be fine and I read Gramps explanation of that and it does not hold any water at all. It is just nonsense. And I agree the science analysis is over the top. I am done with this blog. I want real answers, not nonsense.

I find it interesting that you say green tea should not be used because it is from the same plant as black tea just not fermented. By this standard we also should not drink grape juice as it is made from the same plant just not fermented. Black tea is not recognized by the medical community as having health benefits yet green tea is. I have tried to look to the counsel of the brethren to whom authority is given to reside over me, but have only been able to discern that we should use personal revelation. That is what I do until informed by the servants of God who have been given the authority to advise me in such matters.

Hadley, This is the best interpretation I have ever come across as to the definition of "hot drinks" in the WoW. I strongly believe that the term "hot" was meant to elaborate about "strong" drinks (i.e.,liquor, whiskey, wine,) which produce a "hot" sensation on the lips, in the mouth and in the belly. I think we have missed the mark by interpreting hot drinks to mean coffee and tea.
