Many people, including children would not get to do stuff like swimming if they couldn't do them on a Sunday because that is the only day available to them when they are not working, their parents or not working or in the case of mothers, the only day their husband is around to take care of the kids for a couple of hours to free her up .Swimming is often prescribed for health reasons in fact swim daily , every morning for 40 minutes, during which time I am free of all other demands on me, so I can actually commune with God and pray in ways I don't get space for. Modern life and it's pressures have pushed many of us to our limits, so a little recreational time heals our bodies before we are back to work on Mondays. The body is the Temple of the soul, so we need to nurture our bodies too and just as Jesus rebelled against strict Sabbath laws to heal others, perhaps we also need to consider that something like swimming is health giving not a distraction from spirit!

Hey Gramps... don't you think its hard to define whats improper or not or define recreation? I mean, say we we just got home from church. I've been at ward council, church, and then various meetings after. I get home and my son wants me to play HORSE with him in the backyard or play catch with a ball. Maybe we want to take a walk with our dog in the neighborhood. In my opinion, that is a whole lot better than doing what most people do and sleeping the day away. I could probably get more out of my son communication wise, really get into his heart in the back yard than I could sitting cooped up in our house reading scriptures all day... I guess what I'm asking is...what do you do on the Sabbath?
