From our limited viewpoint it may seem that God "hurt" us, or killed those who were involved in the Passover, but- I fall back upon the story in the Book of Mormon in Alma Chapter 14 wherein the people are burned alive...
10 And when Amulek saw the pains of the women and children who were consuming in the fire, he also was pained; and he said unto Alma: How can we witness this awful scene? Therefore let us stretch forth our hands, and exercise the power of God which is in us, and save them from the flames.

11 But Alma said unto him: The Spirit constraineth me that I must not stretch forth mine hand; for behold the Lord receiveth them up unto himself, in glory; and he doth suffer that they may do this thing, or that the people may do this thing unto them, according to the hardness of their hearts, that the judgments which he shall exercise upon them in his wrath may be just; and the blood of the innocent shall stand as a witness against them, yea, and cry mightily against them at the last day.

So even though their death looked brutal and horrible to those here on earth, those suffering death were "received unto [God] in glory" which is, after all, what each faithful saint is striving to obtain for themselves, is it not?
At least, that's how I view such things, and that point of view removes much consternation and confusion on the subject for me.

It's more a case of God never maliciously hurting us than of him never meting out judgment when it is necessary to do so. We hurt ourselves through our bad choices and sins, ignoring the commandments that are designed to protect us from pain. The Lord simply allows the natural consequences of that behavior to unfold, so that hopefully we will learn our lesson. And sometimes, yes, as in the case of the Hebrews held captive by Pharoah, He does intervene to protect the weak and innocent against the strong and proud. Nothing that He can really be faulted for in that.
