You might consider asking them; " What do you mean by your comment or criticism?" This gives them a chance to think about what they have asserted. Then you may ask: " If you knew that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints was the TRUE Church of Jesus Christ, would you want to be a member" If the answer is yes, then arrange to have the missionaries teach them the gospel. If the answer is no, then you would be casting your pears before swine, so nothing more than your sincere spirit lead testimony should be attempted.

It is not wrong to reply, it is extremely wrong to reply in anger. When we reply in anger we do so with the wit and wisdom that we as individuals have. Our wisdom is then overshadowed by the anger within us which limits our ability to see all of the limited knowledge we have of our own. So, to reply is good and to reply in anger is extremely bad. Is there a better way to do this ?

“For verily, verily I say unto you, he that hath the spirit of contention is not of me, but is of the devil, who is the father of contention, and he stirreth up the hearts of men to contend with anger, one with another.“Behold, this is not my doctrine, to stir up the hearts of men with anger, one against another; but this is my doctrine, that such things should be done away.” 3 Nephi 11:29, 30

We are told “men should be anxiously engaged in a good cause, and do many things of their own free will, and bring to pass much righteousness;" (better when read in context). D&C 58:27.

Pray for guidance and then plan it out in your own mind. Sometimes by the time this is done someone else has said it better than we could have. Sometimes we will now be able to give a better answer than we would have before. Sometimes we might see that this is one of those occasions in which doing nothing is the better part of valor. "There were times when Christ and his chosen servants kept quiet rather than talk uselessly." quoted from gramps above.
