I’d say you shouldn’t feel that you’re ‘sinning’ if you attend the ‘wedding’ (ugh) not because you endorse it, but because it’s what your child has chosen. OTOH, if you feel that to do so is to do that child a disservice, then stick to your position. I don’t think anyone can presume to tell you one way or the other whether you should attend such a event, but the Lord can give far better guidance than yours truly.

In Last October’s Conference (2014) Elder Oaks also said, “Following the Savior’s example, we can show loving-kindness and still be firm in the truth by forgoing actions that…seem to condone what we know to be wrong.”

Seeming to condone to me means saying “Congratulations” or anything like it and attending the wedding.

Thanks for your thoughtful post. We have a child that we maybe facing this issue with in the near future. We are already pondering how to handle this topic. Such a difficult predicament to be in one we never in a million years thought we would find ourselves in.
