Gramps,

The Sacrament is a special ordinance and should be treated with respect and dignity.

Having agreed on that, you will find the answer to the question, “What is done with the left over sacrament bread and water?” in the Priesthood Ordinances and Blessings section of the Family Guidebook (https://www.lds.org/manual/family-guidebook/priesthood-ordinances-and-blessings?lang=eng). Right before the “Consecrating Oil” section, at the end of the Sacrament section, you will find this statement about administration of the sacrament:

“The sacrament should be cleared from the table as soon as possible after the meeting. Any bread that remains may be used for food.”

There is no need to throw the leftover bread away. Learning of the sacredness of the Sacrament does not need to be taught by throwing the leftover in the trash. I prefer that we not teach the youth that they maintain the proper respect and dignity of an ordinance by putting stuff in the garbage.

Regards,
