If indeed the WoW were simply that, there'd be nothing wrong with your son's position. As revealed to Joseph Smith in 1832, that's indeed what it was, but for the capacities of the 'weakest of Saints, or those that could be called Latter-Day Saints'. Since then, with greater medical knowledge and better potable choices available, the items 'prohibited' (in that you can't hold high callings, serve a mission, or attend the Temple if you indulge in same) have the force of a 'commandment', as currently practiced today.

I keep the WoW not because methinks that one beer would be my downfall; indeed, a few alcoholic drinks a WEEK can have overall benefits...IF one is NOT an alcoholic. For someone whose struggled with alcoholism, like someone I dearly care about until she joined the Church some eight years ago, even one drink would be a hazard, and I don't even joke about such things with her, so as not to pose a 'stumbling block' (see Romans 14:13).

I see questions asked what's 'wrong' with a particular drink, substance, or habit, re: WoW, and I would prefer to turn that question around: what's RIGHT about it?

IMHO, "moderation in all things" only refers to good things. After all, a few drops of poison is enough to end a life. Perhaps we should treat violations of the Word of Wisdom in that same light. Hard core drugs are not okay, even in moderation. On the other hand, vegetables are more than okay, but only in moderation, as eating five thousand carrots in one sitting will probably end a life as fast as a few drops of poison would :)
