I've met people before who did first have a testimony of the book of mormon and of the book of mormon first and foremost for a period of time before they were set on if Joseph Smith was a prophet.

The good news is all you have to do is read the book of mormon once a day thoughtfully with real pondering over it and this question will absolutely be answered if your heart is free of darkness. Just focus on the scriptures and eventually you will get to the point where you will realize, hey i know this book is true. And then a short time later you will realize, OK that means the church is true. Then they will realize OK, the prophets and signs from heavenly father are real too, and so is Joseph Smith. It won't be all at once but will fall into place a piece at a time like a jigsaw puzzle.

It will work out. And it will work out soon. But for now just focus on a few minutes a day reading the scriptures consistently. You don't have to read them all day. A few minutes at a time will work, but have your heart free of darkness when you do. You can have some stress and that's OK. Some people will read scriptures when they feel stressed out and they'll come away feeling better but you just need to not have evil intent in your heart when you start to read. if you follow the pattern the spirit will open the truthfulness to you.

Maybe the question asker wasn't asking specifically about one of Joseph's random mortal experiences, but maybe he was asking about one of Joseph's vision experiences. We know from the topical essays on lds.org and also the Joseph Smith papers that the accounts of the vision were different. When I read the question, I took it to mean that the questioner was asking specifically if the restored gospel stands or falls on ONE of the specific accounts of the first vision or if it needs all of the accounts to be complete? Maybe I am wrong. We know through recent information put out by the church that the narrative of the first vision and the theology surrounding that narrative is a collage of the 4 first-hand accounts of the first vision. So, could the questioner be asking whether or not we should be building our foundation on just one of those or is it more mature to take all of the accounts and use the "average" to come to a conclusive doctrine?
