Barbara,
I too inquired into this because my ex husband told me that if I didnt accept polygamy in the next life I wouldnt go to heaven. After asking my bishop, I was told two imoirtant things. 1. God NEVER takes away our free agency. Even in heaven. He won't force polygamy into your life and tell you you accept or don't make it. You can still make it. God is all about free agency. 2. It will be up to the first wife whether it be allowed. Many people believe that more women than men may make it to the celestial kingdom. Therefore single women in order to procreate will need a husband. Under those circumstances I can see why it may be offered. Imagine being a very righteous woman all your life but not finding a suitable spouse and then passing away. You would want that chance. As for me. I'm with you. I completely disagree with polygamy. And will absolutely not allow it into my realm unless God commands it.

Always remember God is a free agency God. You will not be forced in this life or the next.

Barbara, if you don't want to leave the church over this then don't. Your faith and testimony is in Christ, it is HIS church and it is that testimony of Christ, not a testimony of one concept that will anchor you. "Before you doubt your faith, doubt your doubts."

There is no evidence that Joesph did not know some of his wives? There is plenty of circumstantial evidence that Joseph did. Emma's reaction towards various women staying in the Smith home makes a conclusion plain.
