If one is called to be a special witness of Christ on the earth and has seen Christ then that testimony should be openly shared with the world. Saying you can't tell someone because it was such a sacred experience is ludicrous. None of the prophets in the Book of Mormon who saw Christ used that lame excuse.
What is the point of being a special witness if the most important thing you have to witness of can't be shared?
They haven't seen Christ and thus they use that pathetic cop-out just so they don't have to admit that in fact they have not seen him.
However there are many ways to lie and letting people believe something has happened when it hasn't, is still lying. Just harder to prove.

I recently found this hidden principle...
"If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream." (Numbers 12:6) and then i started reading more and saw over and over again the prophets from the book of Mormon, and the old testament confessing that they saw him face to face. Aaron, Abraham, Amos, Daniel, David, Elijah, Elisha, Enoch, Ezekiel, Isaiah, Jacob, Jeremiah, John the baptist, Jonah, Micah saw a vision of Jesus' birth, Moses, Paul, Samuel, and King Solomon sees him too and actually states that in the premortal existence him and Jesus were best friends. Those are just the ones from the old testament too Alma, the brother of Jared, and Nephi all saw the lord in the Book of Mormon. (to just name a few) I'm sure there are many more who can make the list that I haven't found yet. I however strongly believe EVERY prophet has seen him to some extent. the gospel is so cool, once you start finding out stuff and connecting the dots it becomes HUGE!

The best answer to this is to ask the Lord directly. If you are curious, you are entitled to personal revelation that may help you understand this in greater detail. However, there is nothing withheld from the membership of the church that the leadership experiences as regarding blessings of God because God is no respecter of persons, therefore anything that they have seen.. you can do. Nephi desired to see what his father saw.. and he was show the same, but he recorded it in even greater detail. Obedience and faith are the keys we need to achieve opening the doors to many, many mysteries if we seek them.
