That's why some sins are tougher to repent of than others, considering that the principle of restitution can't be fully met by one's own efforts. How can one restore trust or 'repair' the emotional devastation caused by infidelity?

The Lord knows what's in our hearts, however, and He can judge if one guilty of serious sins like adultery is sincere in hi/her desire to make amends for one's misdeeds. And He and His servants have said that adultery can be repented of, though the way back isn't necessarily easy. The Gospel is a Gospel of HOPE, not despair.

Let's not also conflate Church discipline with the personal repentance process. The former is to determine one's standing in the Church. The "Latter", pun intended, is what one does to have their name kept in the "Lamb's Book of Life", or, if personal repentance is not up to what the Lord considers sufficient, gets blotted out.
