Remember, the Book of Genesis was all a vision given to Moses, thousands of years after the events (this concept becomes even clearer in the Book of Moses). Whether literal or not, they were told to give a lesson to the people of Israel: Teach them of their fallen state, their heritage and identity, and the covenants that God made with their forefathers. Just as we don't study the Book of Mormon to get a history lesson, the Bible is the same because it has a narrow scope focusing on one people. Also, like Gramps said, it's better to understand the concepts and respect beliefs better than anything else. For instance, I don't exactly believe in evolution, but I understand the concept and implication it holds, so why try to persuade me otherwise?
