To me this is an easy answer and I think honestly something we argue over because of semantics. All we can do is have faith and repent which lead to actions such as baptism. Faith obviously moves the repentant sinner to action. Alma 24:10-11 to me explains all the we can do. Also 2 Nephi 32:4-5 tells what we "do". We live by faith. What we "do" is done in faith with a broken heart and a contrite spirit. It isn't really anything more or less than that.

I would offer than any Christian who thinks we are saved by gace alone take a good look at the New Testament again so they read the following scriptures they apparently missed the first time. These are all scriptures relating to works being critical for salvation and the reason for it - that is, works prove one's repentance and are what we are judged by: James 2:19-20, Matthew 16:2, James 2:27, James 2:20, James 2:26, Acts 26:20, John 3:17, 1 Tim 4:16, Titus 3:5, Titus 1:6, Rev 22:12-14, Titus 2:14, Rev 20:11-15, James 2:14, James 1:21-27, James 2:8, John 15:14, Matt 7:21-23, John 14:15, Rev 22:12-14, Matt 19:16-17, Deut 11:1. Also, don't forget 1 Cor 1:19-29, which refers to the dangers of inventing your own doctrine to your own destruction. Question of the day - if we're all saved by grace alone, why was hell created? And should we assume it's empty?

I wish that I could just kick back on the couch and let Jesus save me with no effort on my own. No effort to improve. No effort to keep the commandments. Just go out and live however wickedly I want for the rest of my life, and then at the end of my life cash in my Jesus insurance policy and be saved in the Celestial Kingdom. I DON'T THINK SO! Christ did something for me that I could never do for myself. But I have to do my part and put myself in line to qualify for it. I recommend President Packer's excellent video, "The Mediator" https://www.lds.org/media-library/video/2007-01-0005-the-mediator
