There are two applications here. In several cases, the wife of the prophet was referred to as a ‘prophetess’. Then there is the case when a woman with the gift of prophecy could speak as a prophetess. This regards speaking prophecy, which could include testifying of the Messiah or predicting the future. Neither was done in the role of the Priesthood. However, it could still be done for the purpose of leading a limited group, and not the whole. The same could be said today, as a Relief Society President could receive prophecy for the women over which she has responsibility, the same as an Elder’s Quorum President could for his quorum.

No, you do not have to have the Priesthood to be a Prophet. In Numbers 11:29 Moses says: “would God that all the LORD’S people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit upon them!” Notice that Moses says “spirit”, not “Priesthood”. Bruce R. McConkie said, “If all of the Latter-day Saints lived as they should, then Moses’ petition would be granted: ‘Would God that all the Lord’s people were prophets, and that the Lord would put his spirit upon them!’” (“Thou Shalt Receive Revelation”, October 1978 Ensign). He says in this article that ALL members of the Church are entitled to receive PERSONAL revelation, thus making all of us potential prophets. But being a prophet over your own life and the lives of your family is different from being the Prophet and President of the Church, which you must hold the Priesthood for. The Priesthood is not required to be a prophet, in a personal sense.

I think Gramps has given many clear examples. The scriptures DO indicate when women are focused on, with female pronouns used abundantly, so your argument doesn’t hold water.
