So long as Joseph Smith Jr. was alive there should have been no doubt as to the fact of who the Lord’s Anointed Prophet is and to whom such deference should be given. However, after Joseph’s passing things get more involved. A very important point to take notice of is the office of Lord’s Anointed Prophet is a totally distinct mantle of authority than the mantle of the President of the Church. Joseph Smith Jr. wore both “hats” at the same time. People make a great fallacy to assume that the President of the Church is also the President of the Priesthood. Another reason people tend to make this assumption is because in the passing of Joseph Smith Jr. the gift to receive the oracles (revelations and commandments) did in fact pass to the church. Please read D&C 90:3-5. Thus, the President of the Church did also receive the gift to receive the oracles on top of the normal duties of the church presidency. The Church Presidency and the Oracles became tied together. However, it should not be overlooked that the church was warned that if it takes things lightly that the oracles could be lost and that they could and would go to another. Once the church rejected the Celestial laws of Zion its governing body could no longer receive Celestial ministration. Thus, the church lost the ability to receive “Thus saith the Lord” oracles. The church retained the ability to receive Telestial ministration through the Holy Ghost but the oracles were lost to them. This is why there hasn’t been a “Thus saith the Lord” revelation or commandment ever since the higher laws were rejected. Ministration from the Holy Ghost does not come in the first person of the Father or the Son speaking. Therefore, it becomes up to the Lord’s will and pleasure to call a new Lord’s Anointed Prophet in order to redeem Zion to the Celestial Order. Your basis for rejecting the revelations of Robert Crossfield was likely the basis upon which he was summarily excommunicated. Of course this doesn’t conclusively mean he is a modern day Elias/Elijah either. Everyone would need to make it a matter of study, prayer and personal revelation just as a Christian needs to do with the Book of Mormon, for example.

Also, you would do well to carefully compare the “pattern in all things” in D&C 52:14-19 to avoid being deceived and link it up with the companion verses in Isaiah 66:1-5 that give the bigger picture. The humble contrite man who trembles at the word of God who has the responsibility of calling the Celestial Order of Zion back to order is in fact rejected and cast out, meaning excommunicated. The Elias/Elijah of our day, whoever it is, just like John the Baptist in the Jew’s day, shall be rejected and cast out. The consequences of this to the unbelieving saints has already been spelled out in D&C 133:62-74. This is an important question that hopefully will be more fully and adequately addressed.
