As I understand it, it is owned and used by the Community of Christ, which is a Reformed LDS community, Which was founded by the widow and son of Joseph Smith. I do not understand why the answer to the question refers to ' the owners' and not this community by name? It feels disrespectful to me.

I served a mission in Cleveland, Ohio in 2006-2007 and Kirtland was in the mission. We started our mission with a tour of the Kirtland sights, which included the Kirtland Temple. The LDS church is on such good terms with the Community of Christ (formerly known as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) that there is no reason to purchase the Kirtland Temple. Plus as Gramps says they take good care of the site.

As a member of the Kirtland Stake, I can tell p of the properyou that the Temple is maintained and respected by the current owners. Many LDS visitors take the guided tour as part of the historic sites experience. We use the Temple to mark special occasions of the Church, andenjoy the cooperation of the owners (Community of Christ). There is a fine visitor's centre which offers Church history and materials as well as the guided tour. The grounds are beautifully managed. As much as some would like to see LDS ownership of the property, there is free access and no reason to worry about the situation.
