Hi, I would just like to add my opinion. In a recent General Conference, Jeffrey R Holland said, <blockquote> "God is anxiously waiting for the chance to answer your prayers and fulfill your dreams, just as He always has. But He can't if you don't pray..."</blockquote> This is something that I think could really help you. When we pray, we aren't just asking for help, we're telling him that we are humbled enough to <i>ask</i> for his help. And if he sees that we are humble, he can bless us, with either spiritual blessings or understanding, or sometimes physical blessings. In fact, in 3rd Nephi 18:20, it says, <blockquote>"And whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, <i><b>which is right</b></i>, believing that ye shall receive, behold it shall be given unto you."</blockquote> So he will grant us anything we need, as long as it is right, and if he knows that it is part of the plan. It all just comes back to being humble. If we aren't humble, he can't bless us. It's as simple as that.
I hope this helps!

Hi, I would just like to add my opinion. In a recent General Conference, Jeffrey R Holland said,

“God is anxiously waiting for the chance to answer your prayers and fulfill your dreams, just as He always has. But He can’t if you don’t pray…”

This is something that I think could really help you. When we pray, we aren’t just asking for help, we’re telling him that we are humbled enough to ask for his help. And if he sees that we are humble, he can bless us, with either spiritual blessings or understanding, or sometimes physical blessings. In fact, in 3rd Nephi 18:20, it says,

“And whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, which is right, believing that ye shall receive, behold it shall be given unto you.”

So he will grant us anything we need, as long as it is right, and if he knows that it is part of the plan. It all just comes back to being humble. If we aren’t humble, he can’t bless us. It’s as simple as that.
I hope this helps!

Sharing a personal experience that I hope may help others. When our oldest son was almost 8 (2 weeks shy) he developed a very serious illness. For several months he was critically ill and very near death...it was a roller coaster ride as we never knew how close he would be to death on any day. I wanted him back whole and well. But somewhere deep inside me, I also wanted to be in tune with Heavenly Father's will.

So, I prayed like I had never before prayed in my life...I won't say since then too as I learned that praying really is communicating with my Heavenly Father and I love that communication. With fervent pray, I was able to being my will -- what I wanted -- into harmony with Father's will. I know without doubt that Brent could have walked out of that hospital doing all the things he had done before. But I also learned that sometimes what we get is what is really the best for us.

FROM THE LDS BIBLE DICTIONARY ON PRAYER:

"Prayer is the ACT BY WHICH THE WILL OF THE FATHER AND THE WILL OF THE CHILD ARE BROUGHT INTO CORRESPONDENCE with each other. THE OBJECT OF PRAYER IS NOT TO CHANGE THE WILL
OF God but to secure for ourselves and for others blessings that God is already willing to grant but that are made conditional on our asking for them. Blessings require some work or effort on our part before we can obtain them. Prayer is a form of work and is an appointed means for obtaining the highest of all
blessings."

Heavenly Father had a blessing for our family that brought us closer together and helped us become more faithful than I think we would have been without the learning experience of Brent suffering several mental and physical handicaps. We are better people.

Brent lived 14 years with severe handicaps before an aggressive and inoperable cancer took his life. Because of his example, two young men served missions “because Brent couldn’t go.” Three rebellious young ladies (CNAs) turned their lives around and now have eternal families. He was all I hoped he could be with the brain trauma … (It was years after his death before I learned of these conversions -- all of them in miraculous ways. One came as we stood on the steps of the Kirtland Temple and a young mother asked me if we were the ___ family from Bountiful Utah. She then told me her story. Another example came when my daughter was admitted to PCMC and a nurse heard my voice as she recognized it. God is good!!!)

We have a Heavenly Father who waits anxious to bless us. But he is wiser than we are. Prayer not only communicates out desires to Him, it can give us peace when those desires are not ours to have. We have a Savior who has provided a way for us to not only return to our Heavenly Home, but to become like Father. Families can be eternal through the blessing of temple sealings. We have living apostles today who lead us and guide us with their counsel. That is what I know for sure.

This quote from the Bible Dictionary is very helpful: "As soon as we learn the true relationship in which we stand toward God (namely, God is our Father, and we are His children), then at once prayer becomes natural and instinctive on our part (Matt. 7:7–11). Many of the so-called difficulties about prayer arise from forgetting this relationship. Prayer is the act by which the will of the Father and the will of the child are brought into correspondence with each other. The object of prayer is not to change the will of God but to secure for ourselves and for others blessings that God is already willing to grant but that are made conditional on our asking for them.
Does this answer mean that our prayers don't benefit those we pray for because of God's will, but rather benefit our own development and growth to understand God's will?
