I suppose we could speculate on what the "purpose" of the tree of life is or was. Perhaps it was primarily a symbol, something to stand as a contrast. It seems that eating the tree would grant someone something - maybe being in the presence of God, or perhaps immortality, or perhaps both. In Lehi's vision we call that tree the tree of life, but I would say that the purpose of that tree was different - taking the fruit of that tree was representative of coming to Christ, but, as we see in the vision, it is reversible. The tree of life in the garden appears to have the ability to cause someone to live forever. Perhaps if Adam and Eve ate from it prior to the fall, it would be no big deal. They were immortal, they were in (or as good as in) the presence of God. But after the fall, The Lord was determined to not let Adam and Eve take THAT fruit while they still had the stain of sin on them. He did not want them to live forever, be granted immortality, in a condition of sin. They had to have a chance to have the atonement applied to their sin first. I suppose there are other reasons as well, since they still needed to have children. I suppose the actual preparation to live forever is what this life, and the spirit world is for, and the resurrection might be where people are prepared for that kind of life.
