Type 1 diabetics in particular, can go into life threatening hypos if they miss one let alone two meals. Type 2 diabetics can begin to feel shaky if they go for more than four hours without food of some sort. Nursing mothers milk could easily be affected. Lots of medication which is necessary can not be taken on an empty stomache. I would say as in all things, common sense is as important as anything else. if you have any sort of condition that fasting would be detrimental to, then you simply don't fast. You can make what you eat as plan as you like but surely we have a duty to keep ourselves healthy.. I also don't think children should be fully fasting, In the UK, social services would be unhappy and possibly consider it as neglect.

I was counseled by more than one Bishop that if I cannot fast for medical reasons such as diabetes or low blood sugar then don't fast. The Lord doesn't want us to hurt ourselves. What I do is eat a simply, plainly and as little as I can and still pay the fast offering. My visiting teacher was one of those. On fast Sunday she had to bring food with her to eat in Relief Society and she held a Temple recommend.

I agree that fasting can be something other than food when there is a condition in which a person must eat for medical reasons. I was told once from a bishop that I could fast by not watching TV, or not doing something that I usually enjoy doing. I believe that there are many, many ways to fast when food is not the ideal way for a person.

Church leaders have also counseled that some people are not encouraged to fast: very young children, pregnant women and those who are ill, among others. I would say that a medical condition would qualify under the "ill" category, but I agree with Gramps about seeking counsel from the Lord on the matter. It is entirely possible for Him to provide you with the strength and ability to fast, if that is His will.
