A woman who is breastfeeding is likely having recently birthed the child and is in the process of recovery from said birth; that women have the durability and endurance to do so, often with other young children to care for and a household to maintain, shows how tough indeed many young sisters truly are. Hopefully their husbands, as well as extended family members, appreciate the demands on their bodies and psyches and are supportive and patient. AFAIK, the nutrition demands of a breastfeeding woman are just about the same as when she was pregnant. And once the little nipper starts cutting a tooth or so, it's understandable that often they get weaned!

All that in NORMAL times, with supposedly adequate food, water, and shelter, and comforts of home. Now, just imagine the added stress in wartime and/or famine! Indeed, poor quality water and/or malnutrition would tend to affect pregnant and lactating woman as well as their unborn and/or newborn children the worst. Add to that what horrors would be visited on the same category of victims if nuclear weapons were used and yielded significant amounts of fallout. Strontium-90, being one of the principal fallout products, is readily absorbed into the skeletal system as it behaves in a chemical manner similar to calcium; just as with dairy cattle if a pregnant or lactating woman ingests this fallout product, the Sr-90 will be present in her breast milk, and, of course, any infant(s) she's breastfeeding, or will shortly, will readily take it in their own system. Likely in such a tragic occurrence the woman's own breast milk would be harmful to her child, but what else would be available to feed the baby would likely be VERY problematic! Stress, injuries, and malnutrition may render the issue moot anyway, as the poor woman may not produce enough milk, even if she was free of radiological contaminants, to sustain her child anyway. Hence a possible reason for the Savior to mention this unfortunate condition; though it is considered to have been partially fulfilled by the Roman siege of Jerusalem in the first century, culminating with the destruction of the second temple in 70 A.D., without doubt there have been similar incidents since then, including at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Part of the Savior's alluding to "wars and 'rumors of wars' in the times prior to His return.
