Great power comes great responsibility. If you use your power to do evil then you are against God. There's nothing wrong that we know of these things. It is a good thing that we're aware of these things that we may know what's right and wrong. It is a matter of how will you act on it. I'm a Harry Potter avid fan since I was in youth, and these magic, sorcery, potions, spells, magical creatures doesn't affect my church standards. J.K. Rowling's talent in making novels I believe is God-given. I don't think that her writing's intention is to degrade us or lower our self-esteem. There are important truths and moral values in Harry Potter books. For parents, it is important also to guide their children when reading the book, but if you just tell them not to read it because it's evil they'll be more curious to the point that they will do it without the parents knowing it. So it is important that parents should let they're children become aware of it and guide their children to help them know what's right from wrong.

The reality is that Magic, Sorcery and Black Magic is REAL, and it is therefore, BEING TAUGHT in the Harry Potter Series! If Children understand and comprehend that Harry Potter is JUST FANTASY, then WHY, PRAY TELL, do MILLIONS OF THEM write to J.K. Rowling, ASKING TO BECOME A MEMBER of the "Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry?" It is because they do believe that it is real, and not Fantasy! That is so obvious. Also, the official website of Harry Potter, at least when I checked it, linked you into OCCULT and literal Witchcraft sites! Has anyone read in Mormon, chapters 1 and 2, where it refers to Sorceries and Witchcrafts prevailing in the land, and Magics and the Magic Arts and the "POWER OF THE EVIL ONE was wrought upon all the face of the land" (Mor. 1;19.) Wickedness and Secret combinations infest the land, and the disciples, the work of Miracles and Healings and the Holy Ghost did not come upon any because of their wickedness and their involvement with Witchcraft and Sorceries and the MAGIC ARTS, and "THE DAY OF GRACE WAS PASSED WITH THEM...." (Mor. 2:10,15.) The Word of God is prevalent on this topic and such practices are "An ABOMINATION" to Him. I would never allow my Children to subjected to anything that even "appears as evil," as we have also, been admonished. The popularity of these books, attests to some kind of "demonic power" via Spells being cast upon them, and upon those who choose to read them and who make that choice for their precious, vulnerable and innocent Children. Do NOT ever under estimate the formidable foe that we have in Satan, for he is real and seeks to devour us and to destroy our precious ones. I have had Mothers weeping to me, that their Daughters & Sons have become literally involved in the Occult and Witchcraft and even Satanism. It begins with these supposed innocent Fantasy books that DO PROPOGATE THE OCCULT, like Harry Potter, and myriads of other literature that is so readily available in our fallen world. Remember who the "god of this world is," and what his Agenda is, and PROTECT your Beloved Children from all darkness. This is my sincere prayer for each of you. Sister Cher

Seriously, "millions of kids". I'm sure you have some actual research into that figure or are you just pulling it out of your hat? I agree with Gramps on this one. Anyone who is lead astray by Harry Potter, had other issues going on to begin with. The same can be said of any literary work.

I had a Sunday school teacher refer to Harry Potter as a "Christ-like archetype." He always felt like stories like that of Harry Potter, super heros, etc. where one person presents a great sacrifice to help others especially strangers are the manifestation of everyone's instinctive knowledge of the plan of salvation. It's kind of a cool way to think about it if you ask me.

I am a returned LDS sister missionary. The Harry Potter books are some of my favorites. As someone who has taken multiple writing courses at collegiate level, I can honestly say these books are written quite well. So well, in fact, that people imagine that it would be fair wondrous to be part of the "magical" world. However, I can see how uneducated people could confuse imaginary with reality. Sounds like your wife needs a dose of reality and more education (maybe along the lines of science and doctrine). Also, perhaps, she needs something more in her life to make her happier if she is filling it with nonsense.

I agree with Gramps. It's only fictional and the idea of the author was clearly to create a magical world for children/readers to use their imagination and enjoy the read. Children understand that it's not real because nothing portrayed in the book occurs in our everyday life. If you feel it is, then all the Disney movies, nursery rhymes and made up children books that were ever written, produced and published are also contrary to our way of life because it's all a lie!

My children have read the whole series and by no means were they ever confused as to what was real and what is fiction. If you feel it is then clearly don't allow your children to read them. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but there is nothing in the books that is/claim to be contrary to our beliefs in the church because it's all fictional. Put it this way, there are many stories of miracles written in the scriptures that could be seen by non members as magical (appearance of an angel, the chariot and horses of fire that took Elijah into the heavens) to them it's stretched beyond imagination because Christians around the world believe this to be the word of God, true events that have occurred & yet to them, it would be considered very much like the Harry Potter Books. Difference is, we know the scriptures where as the Harry Potter books are fictional, made up and should hold no weight in what we believe as members

Guess Star Wars is out with you too? Sorry Robert, "I find your lack of faith Disturbing." Sorry, just a quote there. Since you like to quote scripture, here is one for you.

Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
It is your responsibility to properly teach your child, and not leave it to the world. Then and only then will kids know that this is just a story and will be able to keep it in the appropriate context.
